Video Game Journalism is Ruining The Industry

Reaction to Destructoid article on "Fanboys"

I think gaming journalists are the worst part of this industry.

They have resorted to the lowest common denominator of journalism, i.e. sensationalism.
I thought the tabloids were the lowest of the low when it came to reporting any type of news, however gaming journalists have taken it one step lower on the totem pole. Why you ask?

There are no checks and balance really. Anyone can start a gaming blog and spout off nonsense with little repercussion. There is no set course for garnering any sort of "degree" as sought by most journalists. Any 14 year old or unemployed 35 year old can start up his blog (yes, this is a blog) and spout off sensationalist articles in order to fuel their own personal quest for ad revenue.

Does this mean there are no good gaming journalists? Not at all. The main drive for these blogs are clicks and hits. Reading about video games used to be fun via Nintendo Power and/or EGM, however that has been replaced by garbage articles like the one Destructoid so "proudfully" published. Now, with the unfettered access to millions of opinions at the click of a mouse, the cesspool of gaming journalism has been given a larger voice while the once sought after articles are being replaced by pieces discussing which fanboy is worse.

Before you start throwing rocks my way, please note that I understand that the general public required ":30" second soundbites" in their news and regular journalists resort to these tactics at times, but the lack of professionalism and tact displayed by gaming journalists is just more prevalent to me.

Articles like the one from Jim Sterling at Destructoid only set our beloved hobby back. No longer is it about the video games. It is about the people that play them, and the ones who are supposed to be championing our hobby are now the ones sending it back to a period where civility is thrown away and greed is the driving factor. Shame on you Jim Sterling and the rest of this so called "profession."
